The UCLA Extension Writers Studio begins February 10th and there are still some spaces left in my workshop: Writing the Personal Essay - a four day intensive course designed to help you reach your writing goals for publishing essays. It's for those of you who have essays you're working on now and also for those who want to start writing them. I call it boot camp because we work hard and the days are long, but we also have a great time. And at the end of four days you'll have an essay ready to send out plus other essay ideas to continue with, and a network of writing buddies. Also - the wonderful staff gives us cookies and coffee. If you're interested and have any questions please email me at: B.Abercrombie@verizon.net. Or if you want to sign up right away contact UCLA Extension.
My friend and student, brilliant writer and teacher (and dog rescue person!), Linzi Glass begins teaching "Writing the Novel Scene by Scene" on January 18th next week. Call UCLA at (310) 825-9971 to sign up.
I loved taking this a few years ago.

Don't leave as the only one who knows your alarm. The other thing you have to have watched over is your home alarm system. If you are the type of person who always manages it in your home, you may have to let someone else in on your secrets.

Yes I know everyone is so exticed to hear the results. I hope to have a big announcement tomorrow (Wednesday). It's been a busy day yesterday and today. (I had to have some minor surgery.) This has been an amazing essay contest and many of the finals judges were reading the finalists late into the night over the weekend because they thought the essays were excellent. There's a chance I might be able to make some sort of an announcement later today.. but it will probably be tomorrow.- Benjamin

OK Seriously reading this post bc I am siittng at my desk ticked off right now. Thought clicking a twitter link and reading something would help calm me. I gave my students a small assignment. Read an article from last week about a concept we are discussing, analyze, etc, etc. Walked around, they all "got it." No one needed help. The last sentence on the assignment "BE READY TO DISCUSS YOUR FINDINGS" in big bold words. So I start discussion, NOTHING. I hint, I almost give answer, NOTHING. Finally one response "There was nothing for you to take up, so didn't think it mattered." Seriously, I want to #barf. I hate this. I do not assign homework for this reason. In elementary grades, their homework only could account for 5% of grade, so they refuse to do it because not worth a lot of points. They learned at early age, if they never did it, they still could make an A. This whole idea needs to go away. By the way, I refuse to ever tell the students how many points anything is.
