Here’s an idea for a writing exercise I found recently on Tod Goldberg’s blog. He got the idea from another blogger, John McNally – and wrote a list of what’s on his desk.
Here’s what’s on my desk besides computer and printer:
A yellow post-it on the phone: “4:15 #1458” (a flight my husband took two weeks ago.)
Three pairs of reading glasses that I bought in a bag at CostCo.
A flyer for a visit of Emma’s pre-school to Sea Side Lagoon. (“Sunscreen on. Bag lunch, no heat-ups.”)
A folder with the name Cosmalia scrawled on it – which I think might be a road in San Bernardino.
White note pads with some of the following notes: “Taking up riding as an adult,” “Late Wife – Claudia Emerson,” ““Signs in fields - 30 hours training – 2 way radio police scanner.”
A book review of Thomas McGuane’s Gallatin Canyon from the LA Times.
My friend Alice’s list of summer books – which I keep meaning to list on this site.
An audio tape of William Zinsser’s “How to Write a Memoir” which I haven’t been able to play because my tape machine doesn’t work.
A thank you note with a line drawing of a dog from my brother’s girlfriend.
Nine books.
A copy of Best Friends animal magazine.
7 copies of The Sun magazine.
A signed form addressed to Hazardous Tree Removal in Running Springs, California
A beautiful rock that I picked up somewhere so I’d always remember the spot where I found it – but now can’t remember where that was.
Stuart and Charlotte’s brush.
6 pens and two pencils
A scary wicker basket that contains stuff I’ve avoided to answer/deal with for the past five years.
My manuscript for the new novel.
Stuart and Charlotte.
To Do: What’s on your desk? Press the Comment button below and send your list. We’ll have a follow-up post on What People Keep On Their Desks.
Four Japanese monster action figures on temporary visit from my kitchen (I’m writing an essay about them as my kitchen gods).
A sealed pack of Mexican wrestler action figures. Please refer to above entry for explanation.
A miniature, celadon-glazed ceramic pagoda, the kind used in bonsai arrangements. It sits at the base of my monitor, where my mind can wander for small meditation breaks when needed.
Three avocado-green army men with sunken stomachs (something went wrong in the molding process) that my son keeps lining up on my keyboard’s wrist support as I’m trying to type.
A green skip-loader and red matchbox pick-up truck (my son’s armored personnel carriers).
A bare pine crate missing a slat, bequeathed to me after my father’s passing last November. It’s an active filing bin, containing all sorts of publications and reference materials that my father would have described as “eclectic.”
A polished septarian bookend purchased when the Nature Company was going out of business, otherwise I never would have splurged.
“Funk & Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary,” which my father smuggled out of his dreary Long Beach office years ago. It was my favorite dictionary as a teenager.
A card deck by Natalie Goldberg called “Write Right Now.”
An ancient stapler also from my father. I don’t think he smuggled this one.
Random pens, markers, colored pencils, and regular pencils strewn about (many from my dad’s place).
A plastic case of computer diskettes.
My trusty printer with scratch paper stored underneath its wire stand, and, would you believe it? A stray army man.
A manuscript formatting book.
A binder containing important legal documents (marriage license, birth certificates, etc.)
A page-up (I love those things!)
Are you asleep yet?
Several writing notebooks on yellow legal pad that hopefully contain something publishable.
Random blue sticky notes reminding me of deadlines and odd words.
Finally, a modicum of dust to give it all that lived-in look.

What's on my desk.I am loosely interpreting this to allow me to tell you what is above and on my desk. Above my desk is a 1948 photograph -- black and white -- of Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera by Leo Matiz. Frieda is wearing a long flowing white dress and wrapped in a fringed shawl. Diego is in a suit and holding a hat. They are staring straight into the camera and as it were at me so I have them bugging me to get to work every day. Behind them is a profusion of beautiful Mexican tiles. On the same wall is a shadow box with Pre-Columbian art -- a mask, a shell, and a tool used for cutting -- a real contrast to the "tool" I am using to compose this comment. On my desk is a bronze tiny holder where I can put inspiring cards. At the moment I have a postcard from the Ojai Valley Spa with a woman sitting cross-legged in a pagoda with gauzy flaps fluttering in the breeze -- far more inviting than staring at this screen. I have a mahogony caddy to my left which has separate compartments for bills, tax receipts, my diary (which I write in only sporadically when the spirit moves me) and files marked "summer vacation", "invitations" and "Cigna Reimbursement Health Forms"/ And clipped to the end of the caddy is a photo of
Barbara's writing class on the Personal Essay, which inspires me every day to keep writing. Thank you.........

Candace and Loren: thanks so much for this quick response. I love the stuff on your desks. May I use these in a post?

In addition to my computer flatscreen and keyboard what's on my desk? Lime green "accoutrements" that I purchased from Target to organize all the papers that I usually have stacked on the desk. I'm very organised although I'd say it's more about organised clutter than spareness. I've also got an old pencil box with a quote from Ghandi on it and inside some clean gel hand sanitizing liquid as well as two pens. On the lamp base is some Neutrogena dry-touch sunblock and a paper clip holder. On top of one of the lime green file boxes is my folded Brownie uniform from 1970 and under that the Fall 2001 issue of the now-defunct magazine "Doubletake." A metal yardstick is sticking up between two file folders, and there's a small plastic Piglet and a tiny sword on the edge of the desk, where my youngest son Oliver put it the other day. Finally, a print of my favorite painting by Fr'a Angelico sits in a plastic sleeve and leans against the flatscreen. I've been meaning to frame it....

Hmm, interesting exercise. Seems to serve as both an excercise in character revelation and a reminder that a little housework now and then would go a long way!
Items on my desk include:
3 dictionaries: 1 American-English, 2 British-English; 1 thesaurus, 1 Strunk & White Elememts of Style, 1 Writer's Reference; 1 Lonely Planet Guide to California, numerous voulunes on publishing, marketing, website design and 1 copy ofBarbara Sher's Live the Life You love.
1 well-thumbed, heavily edited copy of my recently completed manuscript. (yaay)
3 file folders: 1 containing info on agents soon to be recipients of my novel's submission package; 1 containing recent doctor information since I hit 36 and started falling apart this year; 1 containing various bus schedules since I saw An Inconvenient Truth and decided to try to be part of the the solutin and less of the problem.
1 list of menus for the week, developed on Monday shortly before my husband decided he could stand to lose a pound or two and would be eating only grilled chicken and steamed veggies for a while. (Anybody wat 2 gallons of turkey albondidas?)
1 triathlon traing schedule, also developed on Monday when I realized I had only 5 weeks left to get in shape for the triathlon I signed up for 2 months ago.
1 gently used paper towel.
1 empty iLife software box, purchased in order to develop website as part of fiendish marketing plan.
1 back-up disk of recently completed ms
2 bottles of pre-natal vitamins, just in case
3 handmade pots of pens, pencils, highlighters, stapler and wax letter sealer: 1 handpaited plant pot, 1 beuatiful hand-made hand painted pot made by my husband's friend Keoki; one rabbit mug made by me in6th grade.
1 Frankin Planner open to today's date with a list of VERY important things to do
One printed set of instructions on how to build an alcohol stove out of two Heineken beer cans. Downloaded by my husband and given to me to attempt to build before our cycling trip to Ireland nect month so we can have hot tea on the road.
One plastic figure of The Wrong Trousers from Wallace and Gromit, the gift from my husband that made me decide we should be more than just good freinds.
And finally, one wooden bowl from South Africa filled with nuts from 2 Christmas' ago, that I can't bear to throw out because it's wasteful.
Interestingly enough, what's NOT on my desk, I have just noticed are all the family pictures and trinkets I packed up last January when my Mum came to stay and I converted my office back into a guest room. Well, that's someting for me to mull over for a while.

Hi Barbara,
Feel free.
By the way, thanks for the exercise. I've been stuck in different ways with my writing lately; and although I thought I was just making a list, I realized by the end that I was writing again.
Thanks,
Candace

I no longer have a desk. I have a laptop, so I can be more mobile. However, I might as well have one, since I now clutter up multiple areas instead of just one. Argh.
Most frequent sitting spot: the couch. Between that and the love seat is an end table/night stand from my childhood, with my printer on it. On the shelf under the printer: 2 cds's (with Adobe and OneNote programs on them), a bag of doorknobs and hardware from two screen doors I don't have anymore because they were too small, but I thought I might be able to use the knobs later), "Pick-up Drops" (homeopathic remedy), an empty box of Rainbow Nerds, a tin of crystallized ginger, a large soda (Dr. Pepper) from Taco Bueno, paper towels used as coasters, gently nibbled on by my latest kitten. She likes to shred paper (including the toilet paper, which can be a real problem).
Understand that this 'printer' table is in addition to the actual end table between the sofa and love seat. This one sits in front of both and obscures seating on the love seat.
On the sofa are many pillows, and a bra I ditched when I came in a couple of days ago. I forget to take it upstairs, and then later, if someone comes over, I'll stuff it under the cushions, and probably lose it and wonder where it went.
I definitely need to organize myself and do some housework!

Oh, my desk right now is a lot of different places. I've been displaced recently by my son who is visiting us, so he plopped his notebook computer in the usual spot on my desk, underneath the huge print of Winnie the Pooh's Garden. So, it's Have Laptop Will Travel for me and my Dell. I'm now working on an old computer desk in the basement, that was meant to house one of the ancient old tower PC's from the early 80's. I've tried to make it a friendly with a stack of my favorite inspirational books on writing: Bird By Bird, Writing Down The Bones, Poemcrazy, The Artist's Way. Of course, my dictionary and thesarus are indispensible. There are also photos of my son at age 8, 16, and 20, with his respective favorite things at the time - his bike, his car, and his girlfriend (who is now his wife!)
My reading glasses are tossed in there somewhere, a mug with a picture of ducks on it (don't know where that came from) is full of pens and pencils, my cheapie spiral notebooks which I use for journaling and poetry are stacked up high. All in all, the words still come, wherever my body is at the time my fingers are working!

You are correct in that a no dnaeilg desk (STP) broker will profit onlyl through the spread or a commission and not by trading against their traders. Dealing desk brokers can trade against their traders which creates a conflict of interest. FXCM is one of the largest forex brokers and uses no dnaeilg desk execution.
