Barbara, I am so sorry for your loss and at the smae time so grateful. Grateful that Al and your mother loved each other, grateful that Al became a part of your wonderful family, grateful that he led his life with dignity and joy, grateful you were able to be with him and so grateful that you shared this lovely story and man with us all. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jill

I'm so sorry for your loss, Barbara - but Al lives on in the hearts of all that knew him - especially in yours - and you have a well of wonderful memories to draw on. When my mother passed on I dreamt that I took her to sail across a crystal clear sea on her final voyage - perhaps that's where Al sets sail now.

Barbara, I am just a visitor/reader of your wonderful blog, but the story of your step-father/your mother touched my heart, so I want to both send you my condolences and thank you for sharing this story with all of us. So many wonderful family stories are so often lost in the invisibility of a family's non-told memories, it is great when someone shares them, because they remind us of how enriching family memories can be...

Bob Goldman

Al's was a life well lived, much appreciated and loved, and wonderfully eulogized.
Thanks for this piece.

Susan Sonnen

I, too, am sorry for your loss. Both your mother and Al must have been remarkable people...and how fortunate to have found love again! You have blessed us by sharing them with us in this essay. Thank you.

To find love at 79, to become part of such a generous and lively family, to have lived a life on his own terms, Al was truly a lucky man. And from your beautiful essay it is clear that you were blessed that he was part of your life. Condolences to you and your family for your loss. Loren Stephens

What a great tale af a great person who knew how to live his life. It is ironic that I was just sitting here thinking that I may give up on love only to read your entry and Al finding love at 79! How absolutely inspiring!

Thank you for sharing your loss and Al's inspiration.

Dave Milam

Barbara,

Thanks for sharing Al with us. A reminder to fill life full moment by moment and hold hands along the way. And to let the gifts of others, music or otherwise, connect us.
