One day in class about twelve years ago, Linzi Glass handed me a story called “The Year the Gypsies Came” and asked if I’d read it; she didn’t know what it was or what she should do with it. Not only did I love the title, I loved the whole story – the setting, her images that read like prose poems, her characters. It’s a novel, I told her. She said she didn’t know how to write a novel and I said she’d figure it out. And she did. It was published this month in the U.S. by Henry Holt and in the U.K. by Penguin and you can click here to read more about it and to order it.
For those of you who live in Los Angeles, Linzi will be reading and signing books at Dutton’s Bookstore in Brentwood on April 6th at 7:30 pm. Check her website for other appearances.

You asked for reviews of books. Jesus Land written by Scherer is terrific. It is her memoir from ages 10 - 16. Her parents were Christian to the utmost to the outer world but they were hypocritical, racist and hateful to their family. I felt as though I were right there with her living through all the evils. I found this book because it was reviewed in the LA Times Book Review.

Hey Ron,The site's looking very well. So all this wrniitg stuff started off in Mrs O'Flaherty's English class? In between burning the bike shed down probably. I haven't quite got around to reading those revised chapters you sent me. It's possible that I might be able to in the next while but probably unlikely until I finish the term which let's face it, is in only a couple of weeks anyway. Apparently they expect us to read things here.Anyway, I trust the non-fiction (religion?) stuff is going well too.Frank
